NSL can't cancel me
Welcome to my new Substack newsletter: NSL can’t cancel me.
I am a political anthropologist who has been studying and researching nationalism and ethnic relations in China, Tibet, and Hong Kong for nearly two decades.
I am also a commentator who says things that others won’t say. For the past year, I have been been proud to write an outspoken column at Apple Daily, the Hong Kong paper that the Chinese government is obsessed with shutting down. It would be a bit of an understatement to say that the CCP is not terribly fond of me.
As the National Security Law is presenting unprecedented challenges for Apple Daily and making it increasingly impossible for me to publish in Hong Kong, I have chosen to redirect my writings to Substack.
This newsletter, modelled on my former Apple Daily column, will include regular commentaries on Hong Kong-China relations, Hong Kong independence, Chinese intellectual life and culture, Australia-China relations, and US China policy. There will also be plenty of snark and sarcasm to express my disdain for the current situation in Hong Kong: no matter how the Hong Kong government might try, there’s no cancelling this.
